Slovak Sinfonietta Žilina

It is one of the best-known professional orchestras in Eastern Europe and holds a significant position in Slovak musical life. It was founded in 1974 as Slovakia’s only “Classical period” chamber orchestra. Since then the orchestra has attained a prominent position in both the Slovak and Czech Republics, as well as it has achieved a considerable international reputation.

Its 35 members are graduates of the major Czech and Slovak music academies and many of them are winners of international competitions and active both as soloists and chamber musicians. The quality of the players together with the experience and musicianship of the founding music director and conductor Eduard Fischer (1930-1993) brought about the quick artistic growth of the orchestra. Following chief conductors were Jan Valta, Leoš Svárovský and Oliver von Dohnányi, Simon Chalk. For the season 2018/2019, Leoš Svárovský was appointed the Honorary Chief Conductor of the Slovak Sinfonietta Žilina. From the 2023/2024 season, the new chief conductor is the young Czech conductor František Macek.

By 1977 the orchestra attained international recognition when it was invited to the Salzburg Festival and designated the official orchestra of that prestigious festival. Soon after followed appearances at the Prague Spring and the major festivals throughout Europe, including Wiener Festwochen, Spring Festival and Haydn Festival in Vienna, Sofia’s Musical Weeks, Festa Musica Pro in Assisi, Festival de Catalunia in Spain, Festival El Djem in Tunisia, Festival de Bonaguil in France, Music in Old Krakow, Budapest Spring Festival, Bratislava Music Festival, Melos Ethos Bratislava, Mozartfest Schwetzingen, Mozart Sommer Schloss Salem, Schleswig-Holstein Festival, Festival de Manaus in Brasilia, Festival van Vlaanderen, Aspekte Salzburg, Johann Strauss Festival in Vienna, Bodensee Festival in Switzerland, Ankara Musik Festival, Slovenian Music Days, NCPA Festival Beijing, and many others.

The Slovak Sinfonietta Žilina played at such prestigious international venues as the Musikverein and Konzerthaus Vienna, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Philharmonic Halls in Berlin, Munich and Cologne, House of Artists Prague, Tonhalle Düsseldorf, Komische Oper and Konzerthaus Berlin, St. Francis’ Cathedral Assisi, Auditori Barcelona, Palau St. Jordi and Palau de la Musica Catalana Barcelona, Teatro Arriaga Bilbao, Symphony Hall Osaka, Tokyo’s Metropolitan Hall, Theatre de la Monnaie Brussels, Mozarteum Salzburg, Teatro Abadia and Palacio de Deportes Madrid, Tonhalle Zürich, Pavilhao Atlantico Lisbon, NCPA Beijing, Seoul Arts Center, Les Invalides and L´eglise de la Madeleine Paris, and the Great Concert Hall of the St. Peterburg Philharmonic among others.

Altogether the orchestra has given more than 3300 concerts in almost every country in Europe, Asia, Africa, Japan, China, Korea, Brasilia, Canada and the U.S.A. The Slovak Sinfonietta Žilina recorded more than 70 CDs.

The Applicant agrees that his/her participation
in the European Conducting Masterclass
is subject to the following terms and conditions:

1. Unless prior arrangements have been made with the organisation attending all meetings, classes, rehearsals and performances of the course are expected, except those specifically denoted as optional.

2. You are obliged to fully participate in the individual lessons, attending all meetings, classes, rehearsals and the final concert.
Exceptions have to be clarified with Maestro and the organizer.

3.The following options for participation are offered:
active ( conducting the orchestra, individual lessons,  all meetings, classes, rehearsals and the final concert), semi-active (which involves individual lessons, attending all meetings, classes, rehearsals and the final concert) or passive (as listeners of all sessions, rehearsals and concert.

4. All participants are treated strictly according to the time they are entitled to in front of the orchestra or during rehearsals with the piano. maestro and the course organizer decide who can conduct the final concert and which part of a work.

5. Active participant’s fee covers:
– conducting the orchestra for a minimum of 90 minutes;
– 60 minute sessions with piano accompaniment;
– participation in all meetings, classes and rehearsals;
– conducting at the final concert, if Maestro accepts it
– video recording of all rehearsals with the orchestra and the final public concert.

6. Semi-active participant’s fee covers:
– 90 minute individual lessons with Maestro;
– attending all meetings, classes, rehearsals and the final concert, without an opportunity to conduct the orchestra.

7. Every conducting masterclass is allocated a special podium time for conductors as described in the overview of the masterclass.

8. Masterclass fees and payments:

Active participant’s fee is € 1900.

Active participant’s fee includes:
– conducting the Symphony Orchestra; (a minimum of 90 minutes)
– podium time in four-hands piano sessions; (60 minutes)
– individual lessons with Maestro Sieghart  ;
– participation in all classes and rehearsals;
– the final concert;
– recorded orchestra rehearsals and the final concert.

Semi-active participant’s fee is € 550

Daily Visitors’ (passive participation) fee is € 35

There is no registration/application fee.
Payment schedule
– 25 % of the participant’s fee has to be paid as a deposit via bank transfer two weeks at the latest after the organizer’s confirmation of your participation;
– The rest of the participant’s fee /75 %/ has to be paid via bank transfer by 30th January 2022
The fee is 100% refundable only in case of cancellation of the masterclass by the organizer.

The certificate of participation will be provided for all participants who have completed the masterclass for conductors.

  • Each candidate must send a video of at least 5 minutes. If accepted, Bartok must be prepared as a compulsory piece.
    Plus at least one of the two great symphonies.

Conductors are expected to purchase and study their scores before the start of the masterclass for conductors. It is important that you listen to the pieces and prepare them as much as possible to gain the maximum benefits from the masterclass.

The Certificate of participation will be provided for all Participants who have completed the masterclass for conductors.

Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra

The Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra (SOSR) being the first professional symphony ensemble in Slovakia has a history of almost ninety years of remarkable activities. The most renowned artists that performed with SOSR as guest conductors were among others Charles Mackerras, Neeme Järvi, Kirk Trevor, Alain Pâris, Friedrich Haider, Andrew Mogrelia, David Porcelijn, Alexander Rahbari, Vladimir Spivakov, Petr Altrichter, Vladimír Válek, Yordan Kamdzhalov; as well as vocal and instrumental soloists including Anna Netrebko, Yusif Eyvazov, Boris Berezovskij, Edita Gruberová, José Carreras, Peter Dvorský, Adriana Kučerová, Štefan Kocán, Pavol Bršlík, Emmanuel Pahud, Daniel Ottensamer, Jiří Bárta, Dalibor Karvay, Milan Paľa, Juraj Bartoš and many others. International stars of light-music genre such as Ray Charles, Liza Minnelli or Shirley Bassey did also perform with SOSR as soloists.
Maestro Ondrej Lenard is since 2019 a chief conductor.

Martin Sieghart is one of the most versatile musicians of his country.
He is a conductor of worldwide demand, a teacher of many successful international students, a founder and music director of several festivals, a former longstanding principal cellist of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, organist, repetiteur and has acted as an accompanist on the piano for his own Opera and Orchestral projects.

Sieghart was invited to conduct The NHK Orchestra, Philharmonie London, Wiener Symphoniker, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Tschaikowsky-Symphony-Orchestra Moskau, the Wiener Kammerorchester, Mozarteum-Orchestra, Tokyo-Symphony, New Japan Philharmonic and many other orchestras worldwide.

Concert

The concert program will be shared among participants.
The Final concert will be held 4th March 2022 in the Radio Concert Hall, Bratislava.
The dressed recording session will be provided at the end of the masterclass in case the concert is cancelled due to the pandemic.

Language
The masterclass will be taught in English.
Maestro Sieghart can speak also German, Dutch, French, Italian.

Location

The course will take place in Bratislava, Mytna Street 1, Slovak Republic. The town is located 55 km from Vienna and 200km Budapest.

Accommodation

Accommodation costs must be covered by each participant of the course.

Recording

All sessions with the orchestra will be video recorded and each conductor will receive his/her videos via internet.
You can use also your own cameras for video recording of piano sessions.
Video recording of orchestra rehearsals and the concert is included in the price.

Martin Sieghart

Martin Sieghart: is one of the most versatile musicians of his country. He is a conductor of worldwide demand, a teacher of many successful international students, the founder and director of several festivals, a former longstanding principal cellist of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, organist, repetiteur and has acted as a moderator on the piano for his own Opera and Orchestral projects.
Sieghart has conducted numerous orchestras, including: Philharmonia Orchestra London, NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo, Rotterdams Phiharmonisch Orkest, Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra Moscow, the radio symphony orchestras of Berlin, Stuttgart, Cologne and Hanover, the Museum Orchestra Frankfurt and the Residentieorkest Den Haag .
In Austria: Vienna Symphony, Vienna Radio Symphony, Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra, Tonkünstlerorchester Niederösterreich, Wiener Kammerorchester, Wiener Concertverein.
Further collaborations have led him to symphony orchestras from Malaysia, Macao, Sao Paulo, Santiago di Chile, to the Tokyo Symphony, Japan Philharmonic, Japan Century-Orchestra, Orchestra Filarmonica di Gran Canaria, Orchestra della Toscana, Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliano, Philharmonic Orchestras from Ljubljana, Zagreb, Beograd etc.

In Vienna, Sieghart studied conducting, cello, piano and organ. After his studies he collected valuable experience as principal cellist of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, which later proved extremely useful. During this period he was intensely involved in church music. Furthermore, he has performed as a chamber musician with the “Wiener Instrumentalsolisten”, the “Eurasia-Quartett” and the “Concentus Musicus” with Nikolaus Harnoncourt.
In 1985 he switched roles from cellist to become assistant conductor of G. Rozhdestvensky. After stepping in as a conductor for the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, the oldest chamber orchestra in Germany, they appointed him the successor of their legendary chief conductor Karl Münchinger. In 1992 he was also appointed the Chief Conductor of the Bruckner Orchestra Linz and the Linz Opera House. He has recorded numerous CDs with both orchestras.
Sieghart has an exceptional love for the music of the Strauss family. He directed the Johann Strauss Orchestra during its tour of Japan over four years. He has dedicated concert programmes to these composers with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonia and his own orchestra in Arnhem. At the Leipzig Opera house he directed a premiere of “Die Fledermaus”.
At the end of his activities in Stuttgart and Linz he expanded his artistic activities and was appointed Professor at the University of Music and Peforming Arts, Graz. In 2003 he became chief conductor of the Arnhem Philharmonic Orchestra and founded his own open air festival, ‘Mozart in Reinsberg’, dedicated to the operas of Mozart.

There was also the special task of being director of the international chamber orchestra ‘Spirit of Europe’, which recruited members from over ten nations. In 2012, Sieghart founded the “EntArteOpera” festival together with Susanne Thomasberger and Philipp Harnoncourt. The purpose of this festival was to restore works which had been vilified during the Third Reich as degenerate. The Israel Chamber Orchestra was invited as the festival orchestra which Sieghart was also the principal guest conductor of during those years.

In 2016 Sieghart concluded his teaching activities as a professor in Graz and became active worldwide as a freelance conductor and pedagogue. As most artists, his musical life was suddenly disrupted by the COVID pandemic. Thus, he was able to find time to reflect on much, to draw hitherto unknown beauty from life and, now, as of Summer 2021, to carefully transition to his former work. Concerts with the Wiener KammerOrchester in the Konzerthaus Wien, a project with the Noord Nederlands Orkest, a Schoenberg concert, and oratorios by Bach will be his first public appearances. Numerous master classes, in the Czech Republic, Italy, the Slovak Republc, and, this November for the first time in Vienna, will complete his artistic comeback.

….This is a significant and deeply moving performance of the Tenth; Mahler purists will probably avoid it on principle, others will be rewarde with a telling musical journey.

Sieghart is known for his calm and measured basic tempo, which leaves much room for a passionate expression of emotions. Even in the largest forte, the colorful and intense sound stays harmonious and balanced.
